Heroin is a highly addictive drug, and its abuse has repercussions that extend far beyond the individual users. The health and social consequences of drug abuse HIV/AIDS, violence, tuberculosis, fetal effects, crime, and disruptions in family, workplace, and educational environments have a devastating impact on society and cost billions of dollars each year. This is how Alan I. Leshner, director of the National Institute on Drug Abuse (NIDA) describes heroin. Yet heroin that is, pure heroin is just a semi synthetic alkaloid (organic substance from plants), a diacetyl derivative of morphine, a white powder as harmless looking as powdered sugar. Street heroin, however, is an entirely different matter, and it is this form of heroin that Leshner is speaking about.

This is one of the many stories that describe how an adolescent feels when he or she is obese. Overweight and obesity are growing problems. These conditions have reached epidemic proportions in the United States and in most industrialized nations around the world. An explosion in the variety and availability of high calorie, high fat convenience foods and the fact that people are exercising less and performing less manual labor have added to the problem. All of the social stigmas involved with being overweight may lead to improper use of aids designed to decrease weight. Once they have decided to lose weight, adolescents, just like adults, want to lose excess weight as quickly as possible and may do so in ways that are not healthy and do not lead to maintenance of weight loss over a long period of time.

The issues associated with drug use and abuse in contemporary society are vexing subjects, fraught with political agendas and ideals that often obscure essential information that teens need to know to have intelligent discussions about how to best deal with the problems associated with drug use and abuse. Drugs: The Straight Facts aims to provide this essential information through straightforward explanations of how an individual drug or group of drugs works in both therapeutic and non-therapeutic conditions; with historical information about the use and abuse of specific drugs; with discussion of drug policies in the United States; and with an ample list of further reading. Included in this broad category are substances that are legal or illegal.

Fear is a big factor of anxiety. Fear can be innate or learned. When fear becomes triggered at wrong or inappropriate times, anxiety may result. Anxiety includes many different disorders. It can come in the form of phobias, panic attacks, social anxiety disorder, obsessive-compulsive disorder, posttraumatic stress disorder, and generalized stress disorder. This book details each disorder, what may cause the anxiety, and treatment of the disorder. Most anxiety is treated with antidepressants in adults. However, in teenagers antidepressants have been known to increase the risk of suicidal thinking and behavior. Teenagers with anxiety disorders are better treated by learning ways to control their anxiety. There are also other alternative ways of treating anxiety, such as psychotherapy, acupuncture, aromatherapy, hypnotism, and virtual reality. Some alternative treatments have proven better than others have. When reading this book, there is also the history of anxiety and the way anxiety affects the brain. This informative book is well written and explains all the information in detail. Part of the "Drugs: The Straight Facts" series.

WHAT IS METHYLPHENIDATE?
Methylphenidate (e.g., Ritalin®and Concerta®)is a stimulant drug prescribed to treat hyperactivity, impulsivity, and inattention in millions of American children. Methylphenidate was first synthesized in the mid 1940s in Europe. In the United States, it was approved by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) in 1955. The effects of methylphenidate in the human body are almost identical to those of the amphetamines. Amphetamines—the collective name for levoamphetamine (Benzedrine), dextroamphetamine (Dexedrine ® ), and methamphetamine (Methedrine or “speed”) are known to be potent psychomotor stimulants. Because of methylphenidate’s potential risk for addiction and abuse, the U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) classifies it in the Schedule II category of drugs, which includes cocaine, opium, morphine, and other narcotics, and barbiturates all drugs that carry a significant risk of abuse. To be included in the Schedule II category means the DEA must approve how much of the drug can be produced yearly.

WHAT IS ECSTASY?
In 1912 the German pharmaceutical company Merck first synthesized and patented a compound called 3,4 methylenedioxymetham phetamine,or MDMA for short. At the time, many new chemicals were synthesized in the hopes that they might be useful in future research. MDMA, as an amphetamine derivative, had potential as a diet drug. However, like many other compounds, research on MDMA was soon abandoned by Merck. Many pharmaceutical companies at that time applied for and received patents on everything they synthesized, just in case the compound was ever found to be useful or in case they ever decided to do more research on the compound. Many of these chemical products, like MDMA, did not show enough promise to be investigated further, and thus research was abandoned.

Product Description:
In the time of the 1960s and '70s counterculture, lysergic acid diethylamide, commonly known as LSD, was a popular hallucinogenic drug. Though eventually made illegal, LSD was first used in government and psychotherapeutic experiments conducted to pinpoint a clinical use for the drug. These experiments were abandoned due to the unpredictability of people's reactions to LSD 'trips' and the dangerous psychological effects that an unpredictable bad trip can have on a person. "LSD" gives a brief overview of how hallucinogens work in the brain and explains their traditional use in spiritual contexts. Looking at the psychological, biological, social, and legal aspects of this psychedelic drug, this informative new title explains the chemistry of the drug, dispels common misconceptions, and highlights the very real risks of hallucinogenic drugs.Chapters include: Overview of Hallucinogens; History of LSD; Government Testing of LSD; Psychological and Physiological Effects of LSD; LSD-Induced Psychological Disorders; Use of LSD in Psychotherapy; and Comparison of LSD to Other Hallucinogens.

Inhalants (Drugs: the Straight Facts)

Inhalants (Drugs: the Straight Facts)
Chelsea House Publications Pages: 112 2004-04 ISBN: 0791076369 3 MB

Given that chemicals in over 1,400 (mainly household) products can be intentionally inhaled for their psychoactive and mind-altering effects, it's not surprising that inhalants are the most commonly abused drug in the United States today, especially among young people. In spite of their popularity, however, very little is known about how these chemicals act on the brain and body. This book provides valuable information on the history of inhalant abuse, the major classes of the most commonly abused inhalants, what scientists currently know about the effects of inhalants on the brain and body, trends in inhalant abuse, and treatment and prevention measures.
